OverTheAir 2011

There are not many hacker gatherings that can claim to happen in a place where Computer history really happened. I think this year’s edition of OverTheAir managed to definitely be high up on that list. The event took place at Bletchley Park, the location of the British Intelligence arm called the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) during World War II and where famously the German Enigma messages were decoded. It also happens to be the home of the National Museum of Computing, but more importantly in this case, during the weekend of September 30th and October 1st it was home to the epicentre of mobile development, as it hosted all the hackers and attendees to OverTheAir 2011.

We at WAC didn’t want to miss the opportunity to mingle with all the attendees and present some of the work we have been doing regarding Network APIs. OverTheAir is a very eclectic event because it’s not focused on a specific platform. People bring on hacks using mobile web, Android, iPhone.. sometimes even feature phones and Arduinos! As we are currently introducing our Payment API, which works using standards and across all of those platforms, we thought it made a good audience fit.

Update from Peters Suh, CEO of WAC

We launched the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) successfully at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. I would like to now take this opportunity to update you on our progress and outline some key points that demonstrate our continued growth and success since then.

The WAC organization is well structured to move swiftly to meet the needs of our membership and the fast moving ecosystem in which we operate. We have demonstrated to our members the ability to take their needs into account while also fundamentally running an operational business. As a membership organization, WAC has to balance the demands and motivations of its individual members with the overall goals of the organization to improve the enablers and infrastructure which will ultimately bring about a better service for end users.

WAC has a structure in place which includes a Strategy Committee formed by key members of our board of directors and Advisory Committees (ACs) who are tasked with looking at our two key initiatives: Network APIs and web runtimes. These ACs elect their own chairs from across the membership and include participants from many of our member companies. They work closely with the WAC office to ensure that WAC operates efficiently and continues to develop and evolve to meet our common goals.
